Slow Stitchery: Embroidered Cushion and Banner

What is it? Get Creative, Take Notice, Keep Learning

Who is it for? Adults, Young People

Create hand-stitched letter patchwork to make into an embroidered cushion or banner, a slow stitchery project with Penny Gunn.

There’s a proven link between sewing and wellbeing. I decided to use hand stitching to get motivational messages across and like me, you may be inspired to be creative by the natural environment. If you like sewing, drawing, photography and nature then have a go at this project.

  • Take photos and make sketches of the local fauna and flora
  • Be inspired by the natural environment to think of positive messages
  • Get creative embroidering the words onto patches of fabric
  • Make the patches into cushion covers or simple banners

You can take inspiration from local walks, your garden, the Wetlands, Epping Forest etc. If you can’t get out and about, maybe take inspiration from the photographs in the PDF instructions:

Milling About is our programme of activities to support our local community and to connect people whilst COVID-19 restrictions are in place. We’ve received funding from the London Community Response Fund, administered by the City Bridge Trust, to encourage well-being and reduce social isolation. We’re commissioning specialists and creatives from different disciplines to produce activities which  you can do online, from home and out and about in our local area.
