There are three new additions to our regular calendar of events this week. Yoga for Cyclists starts on Tuesday 12 July, and – both on Thursday 14 July – a Warner Residents Get Together and the launch of our new art exhibition – “Home”. Full details of these and all other events are given below – and include contact details, cost (if any) and whether booking is required.
Monday 11 July
6pm-7pm – Gentle Yoga – Learn some gentle healing poses and relaxation techniques, which you can also do safely at home. Classes are small (up to 8 students), so you will get plenty of individual attention. £10 drop in or £9 with a loyalty card. 7pm-8.30pm – Ashtanga Yoga – This class is also led by Josetta who specialises in teaching beginners this dynamic style of yoga, but all levels are catered for.Regular students buy ten week loyalty cards for a discounted £10 per class. Drop-ins are also welcome, space permitting for £11. This class is for anyone with little or no experience of either yoga or Ashtanga yoga, as well as for those who wish to develop their practice. 7pm-9pm – Make your Mark. Escape from the daily rigours of life and disconnect from smartphones, tablets and computers and join Make Your Mark, a 4-week drawing course for all abilities, led by artist Jason Hawkridge. Participants will explore drawing techniques through studying dynamic installations and life models, allowing various drawing styles to emerge. They will take place in the back room of The Chequers and at The Mill on alternate weeks. The course cost is £45 to be paid in advance to secure booking. Tuesday 12 July
9.30am-1.30pm – Introduction to Therapeutic Play. Renetta Fake of www.amind2play.uk. is running this workshop for anyone who works with, lives with or is responsible for children. You will learn the difference between other play and therapeutic play; you will experience some of the ways therapeutic play is used and so feel the difference too. The course is just £15 for three hours and designed for professionals and parents to learn about how non-directive play can help children to communicate and process emotions. Details here.. 10am-1pm- Sociable Sewing Group – Bring your sewing projects to The Mill and sew along in company with others. All sewing projects welcome: patchwork, mending, darning. Come and learn a new sewing skill, have fun with a new fabric project or come to sew surrounded by others doing the same and have some fun. An excellent teacher will be on hand to help and give advice. £1 donation + small costs for materials. Please email if you are interested in attending.
4pm-7pm – Community Acupuncture Clinic – This community clinic offers low cost, highly effective and professional acupuncture treatments making treatments affordable to everyone without compromising on quality and care in a calm and relaxing multi-bed clinic setting. Patients receive treatments in small groups in comfortable reclining chairs or massage tables distributed in the same room. You decide what you can afford on a sliding scale between £20-£40. 7.30pm-8.30pm – Yoga for Cyclists – a 5-week yoga course geared toward the cyclist, but suitable for all. Classes will aim to work core muscles and improve flexibility in areas typically tightened through cycling. They will also provide useful stretches that you can use before and after a ride on your bicycle. The pace is moderate, with select poses being held for longer. The five 1 hour classes are recommended as a course, though drop ins are also welcome (space dependent). £10 per class or £45 in advance for all 5 weeks. There are limited spaces and class size is small, so booking is advisable. Blocks and straps will be provided. Mats available at request, but please bring your own if possible. Wednesday 13 July
12pm-2pm – Laughter Club – Meets weekly and is for people to socialise and make new friends and enjoy pleasant company. Set up originally for people who are on employment support allowance on the work programme with SEETEC, but others are welcome. 2pm-5pm Walthamstow Community Radio Group – A small group that meets at the Mill to make recorded programmes for podcast (distribution on the Internet) and distribution by means of free CDs at the Mill reception desk. Our aim is to explore issues that matter to local people, give a platform to local creative talent and engage in informal chat about all our lives, interests and opinions. 2pm-2.30pm – Mindfulness Training – Robert Beard has been training in mindfulness practice for over 30 years. He is offering a drop-in taster session on Wednesdays which consists of a lead practice called ‘bringing the senses home’. It lasts for half an hour with a prompt start time and a brief introduction to the nature of mindfulness. Attendance by donation (suggested minimum £5).

Thursday 14 July
9.30am-12.00pm – The New Parents Social Drop In is an informal coffee morning for mothers of pre-crawling babies to get to know others who are also welcoming a new little person into their family. £1 donation to The Mill plus honesty box for tea/coffee. 1.30pm-3.30pm – Warner Residents Get-Together – ‘WE’ is a project exploring the Warner Estate in Walthamstow and Leyton. The project has gained Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England funding for a new phase involving an exhibition and archive at Vestry House Museum and a mobile phone app guided tour. We’re now looking to collect memories, stories and old photographs related to the Warner Estate, especially the period when the Warners still managed the properties. If you are a long term resident please come for some tea and cake and share your memories of living in Warner properties, bring your old photographs to show and have scanned. 3.30pm-5pm – Kids Art Club – Themed art activities for children aged 3 years and upwards. We often work with younger children from 3.30pm and the older ones from 4pm but we are very flexible. 6pm – 8.30pm – Launch party for our new exhibition “Home”. Come along to meet the artists, be the first to view the exhibition and enjoy some legendary Mill Punch and ‘nibbles’. The exhibition will explore how amazing our little piece of the world really is and why so many of us have chosen to live here. “Home” is an emotive thing – people have been inspired to paint, draw, write poetry and wax lyrical in many paintings and songs about what it means to them. It’s about more than bricks and mortar, it’s about community, connection and a sense of belonging, it’s not just a place, it’s a feeling. We will be open as usual – 10am-2pm – for you to drop-in and:
- Use the honesty library (a great selection of books donated by local residents which you can take away to read, and then return or not … we don’t check!)
- View the latest art exhibition on the walls of our ‘living room’
- Make a cuppa (tea and coffee supplies are available for a small donation of 50p)
- Bring your little ones to enjoy all the toys in the Childrens’ Playroom, or
- Just come in for a chat – there’s always someone on the reception desk to welcome you.
But you will also find us in the Community Marquee at the Walthamstow Garden Party in Lloyd Park on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 July. We’ll be there with lots of other community organisations. Find out more here.
