This month’s book club, saw another good turnout with members braving the rain to discuss The Woman in Black by Susan Hill.
Many of the members came with their own expectations of the book, having either watched the film at the cinema or seen the play at the theatre.
We were impressed with the way Hill paid homage to the great Gothic novel. We also remarked upon the fact that although the book was only written in 1983, it really does transport you to the time within which it is set.
All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable read and the session ended with talks of a possible excursion to see the play at the theatre.
The next book up for discussion will be a biography called The Man Who Broke into Auschwitz by Denis Avey and Rob Broomby. After this we hope to read and discuss Tender is The Night by F.Scott Fitzgerald.
At the end of the session we also talked about introducing different genres to the group so we’ll be reading a collection of Ted Hughes’ poems called The Birthday Letters, along with Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. The two poets were married and had a very tempestuous relationship, so we agreed that it would be good to read these texts alongside each other. After this we have decided to delve into science fiction and read Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.
We hope that as the months pass, we will be able to cover as many genres and eras as possible.
The next session will be on Tuesday 26th June at 7.00pm where we will discuss The Man Who Broke into Auschwitz by Denis Avey with Rob Broomby
All are welcome
