Milling Around is a brand new online community magazine for the Coppermill Lane/Blackhorse Road area of Walthamstow, E17.<
Created entirely by its residents, it features news, culture and lifestyle elements. It aims to entertain and inform while providing a platform for new writers and photographers.
The paper was founded in the autumn as a club at The Mill.
Please check out our first issue (a Christmas special) containing a bumper crop of articles giving snapshots of how Coppermill area residents from different cultures and religions spend their Christmases.
There will also be regular slots for local history and memories, news, what’s on, letters and recipes. (In the future, we may do business profiles and profiles of local celebrities such as JD, for example)
The aim of the magazine is to provide a platform for local residents of all ages (0 to 99) who want a showcase for their writing or photography AND to create a vibrant publication which reflects the incredibly colourful, cosmopolitan culture of our ordinary-seeming corner of E17.
We want as many residents as possible to become involved either by coming up with ideas for features OR being commissioned to write pieces for us. Ideas for photo galleries are also welcome.
It would be a great opportunity for a young person trying to get into journalism, as their work will be scrutinised by experienced, professional journalists and we can provide support and advice on how to go about putting articles together.
The ‘newspaper club’ is based at the Mill and will soon have regular editorial meetings, to which everyone wishing to get involved is welcome (although attending meetings is not obligatory, writing is the most important bit).
We welcome regular writers as well as people who just want to do a one-off.
