Honesty Library

Take a book if you’d like one. Leave a book for someone else to discover

At the heart of The Mill is our Honesty Library, stocked full of books for children and adults,  donated by local people. There’s a diverse choice of books to suit all interests and in many different languages.

Open to everyone, there’s no need to register and no late fees. Just borrow what you like and bring it back whenever you can.

The Honesty library is different because you aren’t looking for a specific thing. You’ll come across books you wouldn’t expect, I’ve found some really interesting books!

Santiago, Volunteer and Honesty Library User

Having a library open for the community has always been a big part of The Mill. When the St James Street Library closed in 2007 we campaigned to bring the building back into public, and in Autumn 2011 reopened the building as The Mill, a multi-purpose community space.

Our library is run by a team of volunteers, led by a retired librarian, who keep our book shelves replenished.

Donate your books

We welcome more books! Please bring in your books for the community to enjoy. We’ll make sure they’re read many more times, they’ll be added to the library or if our shelves are full shared with other local charities and free community libraries. Or if we can we’ll sell books to raise funds to do more at The Mill.

Why not join The Mill Book Club?

One of our longest running and much-loved groups. It runs every month and is very welcoming to newcomers. Just email jennifer_mensah@hotmail.co.uk if you’d like to find out more or come along.

I always feel welcome at the Mill. Love the honesty library and the knitwear on sale.
