When Britain went into national lockdown in March 2020, it was not only dealing with a health crisis, but a social one too. Stories of doctors and nurses battling on the frontline are numerous, but what happened in local communities is less well documentedThis exhibition shares the stories of those who quietly beavered away to keep society moving, the majority of whom were women. It contrasts their efforts to the 1918 pandemic, with results you may find surprising.

Many of these women have never been thanked, or even properly acknowledged. This exhibition is our way of doing so.

Beyond Medicine is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players.

The exhibition will be on display from Tuesday 20 June until Sunday 16 July – during Mill open hours:

  • Tuesday to Friday – 9.30am-5.30pm
  • Saturday and Sunday – 10am-6pm
