As The Mill building is closed, David, from our Get Drawing Group, will be sharing drawing prompts and tips every Sunday. We’re collecting them all here, so you can take part at your own pace.
We’d love to see you all get involved, get drawing and sharing your art work with The Mill Online.
Week 1:
Drawing prompts:
- Tooth brushes, tooth paste and a water glass.
- Cakes and biscuits.
- Some kitchen tools.
Work in a sketch book if you have one, but you can draw perfectly well on plain printer paper, too. Most important, unless your drawing is rather small, find something to use as a drawing board, -like a tray, or a large book, so you can make your drawing at the best angle ( which should be about 45 degrees).
Try a bit of colour, too – just adding one colour, with a coloured pencil, can give your drawing a little more impact.
Week 2:
Drawing prompts:
- Some vegetables, some whole, some cut in half.
- A plate of half eaten food .
- An opened tin of paint and a paint brush.
Remember to start by lightly drawing the main shapes before you begin to work on details. Its like writing a play: you have to start with the plot – a rough outline of everything that is going to happen, before you can write the dialogue – which is the details and shading in your drawing.
Week 3:
Drawing prompts:
- Find a small mirror and put an object in front of it, and draw both the object and its reflection.
- Cutlery – knives, forks, spoons, a cork screw if you have one. Arrange them carelessly….
- A pair of glasses or sunglasses.
This week, why not try drawing in a medium you rarely use, just to make things a little more difficult for yourself…
Week 4:
Drawing prompts:
- Two or three shoes, arranged untidily.
- An enlarged drawing of a piece of small jewellery.
- Chess pieces, draughts, or playing cards.
- A banana skin curled round – after you have eaten the contents…
Week 5:
Drawing prompts:
- a hand bag or backpack, with some of the contents spilling out onto the table
- an electric iron or an electric drill
- a view from your window
Week 6:
Drawing prompts:
- three or four kitchen tools, carefully arranged
- a crumpled sheet of paper
- throw a blanket onto a chair, and draw the folds it falls into
Week 7:
Drawing prompts:
- Your other hand holding a pen or a coin
- A banana skin curled round after you have eaten the contents
- Half a lemon, with two or three cloves of garlic in front
Week 8:
Drawing prompts:
- an unmade bed, with the duvet or blankets thrown back
- a partly open door with the view through it
- a bunch of keys
Week 9:
Drawing prompts:
- Three or four of your art tools – brush, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener, etc.
- Something you like to wear – on a hanger, hanging from the back of a chair
- An open box of eggs
Week 10:
Drawing prompts:
- An open box of eggs
- Cut a tomato in half and draw it enlarged
- A pair of boots or sandals
Week 11:
Drawing prompts:
- An open kitchen drawer, showing some of the contents
- Your favourite chair
- The view from the window near where you work.
Happy drawing!
