The Mill organises events and activities for the local community, and also provides space for others to run their own events and activities. Below are details of what’s happening in the week beginning Monday 11 April.

All week whenever we are open – Sketched & Drawn – latest exhibition

SKMBT_C36016030515400 copy 2Walthamstow residents of all ages have been invited to show their sketches and drawings for our latest exhibition which has been co-ordinated by local artist Jason Hawkridge. The exhibition will continue until 21 May. So, do drop in to The Mill whenever we are open(check opening times elsewhere on the website) and view the artworks on the walls of the living room. Monday 11 April

6pm-9pm Gentle Yoga

YOGAThis Gentle Yoga class is perfect for yoga newbies or anyone wanting some gentle relaxing yoga. It can help you manage health conditions/recovery, build strength, flexibility and improve sleep and emotional well-being. Learn some gentle healing poses and relaxation techniques, which you can also do safely at home. Classes are small (up to 8 students), so you will get plenty of individual attention. £10 drop in, £9 with a loyalty card, £5 concessions. 7pm-8.30pm Ashtanga Yoga. 

Josetta is an experienced local Ashtanga teacher who specialises in teaching this dynamic style. All levels are catered for; you learn the sequence and go at your own pace. This class is for anyone with little or no experience of either yoga or Ashtanga yoga, as well as for those who wish to develop their practice. The classes are small so you get lots of attention and encouragement. These classes are supportive and fun in a friendly atmosphere. Josetta will adjust the poses to suit people with conditions/injuries. Ashtanga is a flowing form of yoga, great for building strength, poise and balance. Like other forms of yoga, we focus on the breath to achieve a sense of calm and peace. drawing27pm-9pm Make Your Mark

Escape from the daily rigours of life and disconnect from smartphones, tablets and computers and join Make Your Mark, a 5-week drawing course for all abilities, where you can relax, learn, focus and engage with your creative side. The sessions will be led by artist Jason Hawkridge and will take place at The Mill and the back room of The Chequers on alternate weeks. Cost £50 for a five-week course. Tuesday 12 April

10.30am-1pm Tales from The Marsh

A creative workshop in a series held on Tuesdays since 1 March.  Using drama, games, storytelling, creative writing and craft, we will explore your oral history stories of the local neighbourhood. Through the workshops you will generate material for a performance and exhibition to take place this summer on the marsh and in The Mill. You are invited to co-create the work, inputting your ideas around what Tales from the marshand how you want your memories to be presented. There are many roles you might want take on in the production, from recording stories to making props, performing or writing text. The current series of workshops is for Older Adults aged 55+. There will be more for other groups – eg Mothers & Daughters – later in the programme. Tales from the Marsh is part of a research project supervised under the Drama and History departments at Royal Holloway University of London. It is funded through a Waltham Forest Arts Development Grant and a Royal Holloway University of London research scholarship. Places are limited so please contact workshop facilitator, Siobhan O’Neill for further information or to book a place. 2pm-2.30pm Mindfulness Training

Robert Beard has been training in mindfulness practice for over 30 years. He is offering a drop-in taster session on Wednesdays at which consists of a lead practice called ‘bringing the senses home’. It last for half an hour with a prompt start time and a brief introduction to the nature of mindfulness. Attendance by donation (suggested minimum £5).

radio2pm-5pm Walthamstow Community Radio Group

A small group that meets at the Mill to make recorded programmes for podcast (distribution on the Internet) and distribution by means of free CDs at the Mill reception desk. Our aim is to explore issues that matter to local people, give a platform to local creative talent and engage in informal chat about all our lives, interests and opinions. Please check out our past programmes at Millradio.com and join us on the second Wednesday of each month between 2.00 and 5.00 pm to make new ones. MoonPhasesMenopause6pm-8pm Let’s talk about the menopause  

The first of a monthly get-together (well, lets keep the rhythm!) on the second Wednesday of each month to share experiences, helpful knowledges, healing and dealing strategies and whatever else of use and fruit comes up. Enjoy some free time in a safe space to talk about the physical and emotional shifts that take us from woman to woman!  Let’s see how we can help each other with the unseen/unspoken challenges facing the menopausal woman. Bring yourself and your experiences of the journey and a half! Free but suggested donation of £2 to cover room hire. Sunday 17 April

No particular activities this Sunday … but we are open 11am-2pm so you can still come along – because whenever we are open you can just call in:

  • to use the honesty library (a great selection of books donated by local residents which you can take away to read, and then return or not … we don’t check!)
  • view the latest art exhibition on the walls of our ‘living room’
  •  make a cuppa (tea and coffee supplies are available for a small donation of 50p)
  • bring your little ones to enjoy all the toys in the Childrens’ Playroom, or
  • just come in for a chat – there’s always someone on the reception desk to welcome you.
